Anime
The word "anime" comes from the Japanese word for "animation". Most people in the west consider anime to be any type of animated Asian cartoon, but in the rest of the world anime usually means Japanese animation. The first anime started coming out in the early 1900s and quickly gained popularity.
Animated Japanese cartoons (anime) and Japanese comics (manga) exploded in Japan and have become a hit all over the world, especially in the United States. Anime has outgrown it's original purpose as just animated cartoons and has grown into full length movies, video games, corporate commercials and more.
Even though many people would consider anime to just be a new form of cartoons, anime is more popular with young adults than children. This is most likely because anime runs in a series, not just an episode-to-episode basis and young adults are easily able to follow the storyline and look forward to future episodes.
